Plug Socket
Gauge plugs are cylindrical bars manufactured specifically to obtain a correct size of the barrel within the hole. These plugs are frequently used in a number of different industries to obtain an accurate calibration, either in imperial or metric sizes, often as accurate as 2 microns. Gauge plugs are often bought in a set of progressively larger sizes although the specific size can be bought individually. To accurately obtain the appropriate measurement, a gauge is fitted into the space to be measured. If this is too large, progressively smaller sizes are tried until a suitable plug is found that fits into the socket most comfortably. Once the snuggest fit has been achieved, it is an easy matter to purchase the appropriate size plug to fit the socket, whether this is an automatic sense or in one of the other industries that require suitably sized plugs to be fitted into their matching sockets.
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Gauge plugs are manufactured very accurately, calibrated to within 2 microns on grinding and lapping machines that is operated at particularly high precision by a particularly skilled work force. The specifications that relate to the accuracy of these plugs are realized by IS 6137; IS6244; as well as IS3455, amongst others, dependent on whether these are air plug gauges, special gauges, taper plug gauges, or one of the other variety of plugs essential to so many industries. Regardless of the variety of gauge plugs manufactured, the best manufacturers of this kind of plugs are manufactured to ensure they have particularly high enough tolerance so they remain in service for longer. The National Institute of Standards and Technology are responsible for establishing and maintaining the standards considered appropriate for the various requirements for gauge plugs within each different industry.
ANPT Plugs
These gauge plugs are manufactured to conform to SAE AS71051 specification as components for the aeronautical industry. The Aeronautical National Form Taper Pipe Thread Gauge Plugs are used specifically in cases where a sealed thread joint is required, or where straight threads with a gasket or O-ring assembly have been found to be insufficient for the task required of them. Other specifications for these plugs are MIL-G-10944 and AND10052.
There are many more of these kinds of plugs manufactured, apart from the ANPT variety. Another gauge plug, ANSI/ASME B1.20.5 Gauge Plugs by NPTF are designed to produce a tight seal in a joint that will be subject to high internal pressures, so that the joint remains tightly sealed without having to resort to sealing compounds. Then there is the set of metric gauges, again conforming to ANSI/ASME B1.20.5 specifications, as well as the reversible metric thread gauges, the Taperlock design gauge plugs and the STI plugs which incorporate the calibration for internal threads with places to insert screws. Each of these plugs are different, manufactured to a high degree of precision, each designed to conform to specific criteria according to the job they have to do.
