In 1997,Karen McDougal has tried and won her local Venus Swimwear swimsuit competition in Michigan. The success has attracted the attention of Playboy photographer David Mecey. Shortly thereafter he was approached by Playboy for a test session at Playboy Studio West which she accepted. After the test session, which was quickly chosen to return a complete photo and video recording and the name "Miss December 1997.  His painting was shot by photographers Richard Fegley and Stephen Wayda, has a theme in the winter , and the shooting outside in the snowy fields near Park City, Utah. Her video "Playmate Profile", appeared on Playboy TV soon after his debut in the magazine .

Announced in May 1998 that of Hugh Hefner and fans as Playmate of the Year (PMOY) for 1998 were elected at a luncheon at the Playboy Mansion.
